Amateur radio operators,

I wanted to send my sincere thanks for all of the reports we received from area amateur radio operators during our most recent winter storm and let you know how we used them.

We received 303 reports from our 33 counties during the event and many of these reports originated from an amateur radio operator.  These reports were a tremendous asset to us as we adjusted our forecast to pinpoint the heaviest snow bands in the winter storm.  The reports were also quickly sent out to the rest of the world as a Local Storm Report which the media see and use on their broadcasts.  We combined all of the snowfall reports we received in order to create the maps and information you can see on our summary webpage for the event at http://www.weather.gov/jkl/winterstorm2016summary.  Your reports are also used by county and state level Emergency Management to document the rarity of such an event in support of aid requests.

Again, we thank you for the reports, and hope you understand how important they are to the mission of the NWS!

Minutes of the Meeting of
January 7, 2016 Thursday

Unfortunately, the January 7th meeting had to be cancelled due to a CPR class being taught in the meeting room of the fire department. No one knew about the class until members started showing up for our meeting.

Hopefully, this will not be a common occurrence and we will be able to carry on as usual.  However, some alternatives were being discussed, and we will keep you apprised of any changes in our meeting place and time if they should occur.  Please watch your email or look on the website (www.ky4arc.com)  for any changes.

Thanks

Well.....
An unofficial gathering did occur!!!

Many did show up and was disappointed that we had no meeting room to do our official meeting.

However, we did have a demonstration of an HF loop antenna by Kevin McMillan - KM4LTV, which was great!!

Ed - KB8QEU - took pictures in the night using street lights of the demonstration. They will be added here later when he gets them off his phone and lightened up some. He said it was a great time to experiment with the moon light setting and ISO of 200!.

There were two non-hams that showed up, but, and not only they were taught quite a bit and definitely that the meeting's location was occupied without the club not being informed of such and not to be set back by it. They both understood and were asking a LOT of questions. I don't think their interests in Amateur Radio was deminished a least bit!

There were plenty of discussion about a meeting locational change. Some suggested Pondarosa, in Paintaville!!! Others suggested Geovonnies, in Prestonsburg!!! One suggested a school in Paintsville which seems good too! All suggestions were great ones.

I agree where there is food, there will be people to come.

Several counted about 15 or 16 showed up to be at the meeting.

It was very interesting standing for 2½ hours, in 37°F, and thoroughly enjoyed the gathering!!! Now, mind you, it won't be a habit. But, if a disaster happens in the cold, I will do what it takes to help.

Repeaters: As right now, I have a record of three down. The 146.625, 146.895 and the 146.700. I need corrections if I am wrong. Just leave a comment at the comment page.

So, that's it from my point of view. I want to thank those who did attend the unofficial meeting of the ARCS!!

And to those at the PFD, will you PLEASE let us know when you resurp the room! Thank you!

Ed - KB8QEU - Member ARCS
